The City of East Prairie, population 3,176, is located in southern Mississippi County in Southeast Missouri. Situated at the top of the Missouri Bootheel, Mississippi
County is at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Mississippi County is the easternmost county in the State of Missouri, and is the easternmost county west of the Mississippi River in the nation. It is bordered on the north, east and south by more than ninety miles of Mississippi River frontage.
Founded in 1883 by the St. Louis Southwestern Railway Company, East Prairie is a small community, with a rich and varied history. East Prairie and Mississippi County have an agriculture-based economy. There are several small manufacturing firms in the county.
The citizens of East Prairie have always shown desire to change and improve their quality of life. Past community betterment awards, small business efforts, and community participation in annual events have illustrated the citizens’ creativity and desire to work together as a community. Community pride is strong in East Prairie.
In 1994, East Prairie was named an Enterprise Community, the only rural designation awarded. Today, the Strategic Plan and community betterment commitment continues.
